Rust is a familiar problem to anyone who has worked with ferrous metals, and STEEL-IT is a new solution to this familiar challenge. Steel corrodes and weakens into hydrated iron oxide. While stainless grades are significantly less vulnerable, all steel is subject to oxidation and therefore corrosion via the rusting process. Rust is unattractive, stains other surfaces, and—most importantly—ultimately leads to structural failure.
Stainless steel, while more corrosion resistant than other steel grades, costs three to fifteen times more than other steel grades. Familiar solutions to the problem of balancing cost with corrosion resistance are galvanizing and powder coating of structural steel or steel design elements. These methods have some significant limitations, including difficulty of touch up, no possibility of field application, and necessary frequent maintenance. STEEL-IT eliminates these limitations. Applied like paint, STEEL-IT is akin to spraying on a layer of high-grade stainless steel.
